The Álvarez family has grown coffee in El Salvador for more than 100 years and for four generations. Its award-winning farms are located in the lush green hills of Santa Ana in the west of the country, whose rich volcanic soils and mild climate provide ideal conditions for growing coffee. The beans that together make up El Borbollón come from two small neighboring farms: La Reforma and Santa María.
The El Borbollón mill is managed by Eduardo Álvarez, whose father (also Eduardo) inherited his passion for growing coffee and inspired him to always strive for the highest quality. Under Eduardo's leadership, the plant has increasingly accessed specialty markets and has provided key technical assistance and guidance to the farms it works with. In fact, Eduardo's hard work and advocacy has allowed many of these farms to place in Cup of Excellence competitions. Of the 15 high-altitude farms that El Borbollón works with, 10 have won places in the Cup of Excellence competitions. 4 of them, including La Reforma, have won the COE Presidential Award for achieving scores above 90 points.
